| Savings goals tracker |
| Notes: what this workbook does, how to use it and the method behind it. |
| What it does |
| Tracks several savings goals at once: how much each goal needs each month to reach its target by its date, whether the planned contribution keeps up, and when each goal is projected to finish. |
| The Goals tab holds the targets and the status. The Contributions tab logs deposits and withdrawals and totals them by goal and month. The Projection tab rolls each balance forward 24 months. The Dashboard summarizes all three. |
| The example data is fictional: eight goals and 118 log rows over twelve months, including two withdrawals and two lump-sum deposits. |
| How to use it |
| 1. On the Goals tab, set the as-of date. Enter each goal's priority, target amount, target date, starting balance, account, savings rate and planned monthly contribution. |
| 2. On the Contributions tab, log each deposit and withdrawal with its date, goal and amount. Use a negative amount for a withdrawal. |
| 3. Read the Row check column on the Contributions tab and fix any row that is not marked OK. |
| 4. Read the status, the needed amount and the projected completion date for each goal on the Goals tab. |
| 5. Read the progress bars, the monthly totals and the next three deadlines on the Dashboard. |

What does this template do?
A savings goals tracker for a household or a small team that saves toward several targets at once. Each goal has a target amount, a target date, a starting balance, a savings rate and a planned monthly contribution. The Goals tab shows what each goal needs per month to finish on time, whether the plan keeps up with that need, and when the goal is projected to finish.
The Contributions tab logs every deposit and withdrawal, and a negative amount is a withdrawal. A monthly grid totals the log by goal and month. The Projection tab rolls each balance forward 24 months with the planned contribution and the monthly rate. The amount needed each month uses PMT with the monthly rate, or the remaining amount divided by the months left when the rate is zero. The projected completion date uses NPER.
The dashboard shows total saved, the total of all targets, overall progress and how many goals are on track, with a progress bar for each goal and the three nearest deadlines. Interest earned before the as-of date is not calculated, so log any interest the bank paid as a contribution. The example data is fictional: eight goals and 118 log rows over twelve months.
What’s inside

- Projected completion date from NPER at the planned monthly contribution
- Monthly totals by goal from the log, with a sparkline for each goal
- A 24-month projection with a diamond in the month each goal is reached

What formulas does this template use?
This template holds 1,990 formulas in 2,681 cells across 5 tabs, so 74% of its cells calculate. They use 25 distinct functions; the longest formula is 2,827 characters and 678 of them read from another tab.
| Function | Uses | What it does |
|---|---|---|
IF | 4,894 | one result when a test is true, another when false |
AND | 775 | true when every test is true |
MAX | 711 | largest value |
ROUND | 650 | rounds to a number of digits |
CHOOSE | 555 | picks the nth value from a list |

SUM | 60 | adds numbers |
The 12 most used of 25 functions. Counted from the workbook itself. Only functions that Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets and Apple Numbers evaluate the same way are used, so the formulas survive every download format.
How do you use it?
- On the Goals tab, set the as-of date, then enter each goal's target, target date, starting balance, account, savings rate and planned monthly contribution.
- On the Contributions tab, log each deposit and withdrawal on its own row. Use a negative amount for a withdrawal.
- Read the status, the needed amount and the projected completion date for each goal on the Goals tab.
- Check the monthly grid and the projection for timing, then adjust the planned contributions.
- Read total saved, overall progress and the next three deadlines on the Dashboard.
What is it good for?
- Tracking an emergency fund alongside holiday and car savings
- Planning a home down payment with a fixed monthly transfer
- Seeing which goal falls behind and by how much each month
- Projecting when savings goals finish at the current pace
Questions about this sheet
How is the monthly amount needed worked out?
It is the payment that grows the current balance to the target by the target date, using PMT with the savings rate divided by 12. When the rate is zero, it is the remaining amount divided by the months left.
Does the current balance include interest?
Interest earned before the as-of date is not calculated. Log any interest the bank paid as a contribution. The projection adds interest each month after the as-of date.
What does a negative amount mean?
A negative amount on the Contributions tab is a withdrawal, such as a repair or a purchase paid from the goal. It reduces the balance and the monthly total.
Why does a goal show Past target date?
Its target date is before the as-of date and the balance has not reached the target. Change the target date or the target amount and the status updates.
