About this dataset

This workbook holds monthly weather for 60 cities in 59 countries on 6 continents for 2025, taken from NASA's POWER project. For every city and month it lists mean temperature, the highest and lowest hourly temperature, precipitation (daily average and month total), relative humidity, wind speed at 2 m and solar irradiance in kWh per square meter per day.

The Monthly tab is a long table of 720 rows, ready to filter, pivot or chart. The Annual summary tab calculates, with formulas, each city's mean temperature, warmest and coldest month, total precipitation, wettest and driest month and annual averages of humidity, wind and sunshine. The Cities tab gives coordinates, country, continent and elevation.

POWER combines the MERRA-2 reanalysis (grid of 0.5 by 0.625 degrees) with satellite solar data, so each value describes a grid cell around the city and not a weather station. The About tab explains each variable, the unit conventions and the citation NASA asks for. Nothing is estimated or filled in.

What’s inside

  • 60 cities in 59 countries on 6 continents, from equatorial to subarctic climates
  • 720 monthly records for 2025, all complete, with 8 POWER variables
  • Precipitation as both a daily average and a month total, as published by POWER
  • Annual summary calculated with AVERAGEIF, SUMIFS, MAX, MIN, INDEX and MATCH
  • Coordinates to 2 decimals plus POWER grid elevation and city elevation
  • Citation text from NASA POWER included on the About tab

Tabs

TabWhat it holds
Monthly720 rows: one row per city and month with temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind and solar irradiance.
Annual summaryOne row per city with formula-based annual means, totals, warmest, coldest and wettest months.
CitiesCity, country, ISO2, continent, coordinates, POWER grid elevation and city elevation.
AboutVariable definitions, units, method, sources, license and the NASA POWER citation.

How to use it

  1. Open the Monthly tab and filter by city, country or month with the header drop-downs.
  2. Select a city's 12 rows and insert a line or column chart to see its year.
  3. Read the Annual summary tab to compare cities by mean temperature, rainfall total or sunshine.
  4. Use the Cities tab for coordinates, ISO2 codes and elevation, and join on city or country name.
  5. Copy the credit line from the About tab when you publish results.

Good for

  • Comparing climates of cities for travel or relocation planning
  • Teaching material on seasons, monsoons and the Southern Hemisphere
  • Solar and heating or cooling feasibility screening
  • Charts and maps of temperature or rainfall by city
  • Sample data for pivot tables and dashboards

Questions about this sheet

Are these weather station readings?

No. POWER values come from the MERRA-2 reanalysis on a grid of 0.5 by 0.625 degrees and from satellite solar data, so each number describes a grid cell around the city and can differ from a station, especially near coasts and mountains.

Why are the highest and lowest temperatures so extreme?

POWER's monthly maximum and minimum are the single highest and lowest hourly temperatures in the month, not averages of daily highs and lows. Use the mean temperature column for typical conditions.

What unit is precipitation in?

Two columns are provided: the daily average in mm per day and the month total in mm. POWER labels the total's unit as mm/day, but the values are monthly sums, which the About tab shows.

Why 2025 and why one year only?

2025 is the latest complete calendar year in POWER at the time of retrieval. It is a single year of weather, not a long-term climate average.

How should I credit the data?

NASA asks users to state that the data came from the POWER project, with the service version and date accessed. The ready-to-use wording is on the About tab.
