About this dataset

A reference table of 217 countries and territories, one row each, built from the World Bank country list and World Development Indicators plus Natural Earth. Each row carries the ISO2 and ISO3 codes, ISO numeric code, continent and subregion, World Bank region and income level, capital city with latitude and longitude, and the latest population, surface area and land area, each with its year.

Population density is calculated by formula (population divided by land area), and a By region tab totals countries, population and area by World Bank region and by continent with COUNTIF and SUMIF. The Countries tab is sorted by name, with a frozen header and filters on every column.

The About tab documents every source, license and join, including how the World Bank and Natural Earth identifiers were matched, which entries are disputed, partially recognized or dependencies, and where the sources leave gaps. Nothing is estimated: a blank cell means the source has no value.

What’s inside

  • 217 countries and territories with ISO2, ISO3 and ISO numeric codes
  • 7 World Bank regions, 4 income levels, 6 continents and Natural Earth subregions
  • Capital city with coordinates for 211 entries
  • Latest population (217), surface area (216) and land area (216) with their years
  • Population density by formula; By region tab with COUNTIF and SUMIF
  • Documented join between World Bank and Natural Earth identifiers, including disputed territories

Tabs

TabWhat it holds
Countries217 rows: codes, continent, region, income, capital, population, areas, density, with filters.
By regionCountries, population and area totals by World Bank region and by continent (COUNTIF and SUMIF).
AboutColumns, sources, licenses, join log, disputed territories, naming conventions and gaps.

How to use it

  1. Open the Countries tab and use the header filters to select a region, continent or income level.
  2. Join the table to your own data on ISO3 or ISO2; use the ISO numeric column for UN-coded sources.
  3. Sort by population, land area or density to rank countries.
  4. Read the By region tab for regional totals, then check the About tab for notes on territories.
  5. Copy the credit line from the About tab when you publish.

Questions about this sheet

Which countries are included?

The 217 entries of the World Bank country list that belong to a region, including territories such as Puerto Rico, Hong Kong SAR and Greenland. Natural Earth features without a World Bank entry, such as Taiwan, are listed on the About tab but not included.

Why are some names written like 'Korea, Rep.'?

They are World Bank names, kept so the table joins to other World Bank data. ISO2 and ISO3 columns give a neutral key, and the About tab lists the unusual names.

How is population density calculated?

By formula as population divided by land area in km². Population is mostly from 2025 and land area from 2024, and the year columns show which.

How were the World Bank and Natural Earth tables matched?

On the World Bank ISO3 code against Natural Earth's ADM0_A3, with documented exceptions for South Sudan, Palestine, Kosovo, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. The About tab has the join log.

Are the capital coordinates exact?

They are the World Bank's published values and are approximate. A few are tens or hundreds of kilometers off the actual capital; the About tab names them.
