What does this dataset do?

This workbook holds annual inflation for 217 economies from 1990 to 2025 in two measures: consumer prices, the yearly change in the consumer price index from the IMF's International Financial Statistics database, and the GDP deflator, the yearly change in the implicit price index of economy-wide output. The figures are the World Bank's World Development Indicators, unmodified. Each measure has its own tab, laid out as one row per country and one column per year.

The Latest year tab gives each country's most recent consumer price inflation, the year before, the change between them, a five-year average and a ten-year sparkline, all calculated by formula from the data tab. The Decades tab averages each decade. The Dashboard shows world inflation with a bar for every year, the regional picture for the latest year, and the 15 highest-inflation countries.

Every number is the published value. Where the World Bank publishes nothing, the cell is blank and nothing is estimated. Heat-map colors reflect the published values when the file was built, and deflation is shown in a blue tint. The About tab quotes the official definitions and gives a credit line under CC BY 4.0.

What formulas does this dataset use?

This dataset holds 4,099 formulas in 22,555 cells across 7 tabs, so 18% of its cells calculate. They use 18 distinct functions; the longest formula is 2,725 characters and 2,051 of them read from another tab.

FunctionUsesWhat it does
IF5,448one result when a test is true, another when false
MAX5,041largest value
MIN5,040smallest value
ROUND3,110rounds to a number of digits
ISNUMBER3,087true for a number
CHOOSE1,930picks the nth value from a list
IFERROR1,278swaps an error for a fallback value
OR1,180true when any test is true
REPT1,180repeats text
AVERAGE1,061mean of numbers

The 12 most used of 18 functions. Counted from the workbook itself. Only functions that Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets and Apple Numbers evaluate the same way are used, so the formulas survive every download format.

How do you use it?

  1. Open the Dashboard for world inflation, the regional picture and the highest-inflation countries.
  2. Open a data tab, pick a country row and read across the years, or copy a column for one year.
  3. Use the Latest year tab to compare countries on their most recent value, and the year column says which year each figure is from.
  4. Use the Decades tab to compare average inflation across decades for each country.
  5. Copy the credit line from the About tab when you publish anything based on the data.

Underlying sources per the World Bank: consumer prices from the IMF International Financial Statistics database; GDP deflator from national statistical offices, central banks and World Bank staff estimates. Values are unmodified; blank means not published. Country list and region and income-group assignments come from the World Bank country API (entries with a region other than 'NA').

What is it good for?

  • Comparing inflation across countries in the latest year
  • Tracking world inflation year by year since 1990
  • Finding episodes of deflation or very high inflation in a country's history
  • Building regional comparisons for an economics or finance report
  • Joining inflation rates to GDP and country data on ISO3 codes

Questions about this sheet

What is the difference between the two inflation measures?

Consumer price inflation tracks a basket of goods and services bought by the average consumer. The GDP deflator tracks price change across all of an economy's output, so it can differ from consumer prices.

What do negative values mean?

A negative value is deflation, meaning average prices fell over the year. The Dashboard counts the countries in deflation in their latest year.

Why are some cells blank?

The World Bank publishes no value for that country and year. 24 economies have no consumer price value in any year, and this file does not estimate them.

Can I use these figures commercially?

Yes. The World Bank publishes this data under CC BY 4.0, which allows commercial use and adaptation with attribution. The About tab has a credit line you can copy.

Will the numbers match the World Bank website?

They match the API response retrieved on 2026-10-09 (database updated 2026-10-08). The World Bank revises recent years with each update, so later downloads may differ.
