What does this dataset do?

This workbook holds the share of each country's population using drinking water and sanitation services, and the share with a handwashing facility with soap and water, for 217 economies from 2000 to 2024. The figures are the World Bank's World Development Indicators, which republish the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) estimates. Five indicators each have their own tab, laid out as one row per country and one column per year.

The Latest year tab gives each country's most recent value and year for every indicator, the gap to universal coverage (100 minus the value) and two text bar columns. The Dashboard shows world figures for the latest year, a world trend, regional comparisons and the 15 countries with the lowest safely managed drinking water, all computed by formula from the data tabs.

Every number is the published value, unmodified. Where no value is published the cell is blank, and nothing is estimated. The heat-map colors reflect the published values when the file was built. The About tab quotes the official indicator definitions and gives a ready-to-use credit line under CC BY 4.0.

What formulas does this dataset use?

This dataset holds 3,157 formulas in 30,646 cells across 9 tabs, so 10% of its cells calculate. They use 14 distinct functions; the longest formula is 2,854 characters and 1,355 of them read from another tab.

FunctionUsesWhat it does
IF3,227one result when a test is true, another when false
ISNUMBER1,437true for a number
INDEX1,205value at a position in a range
MATCH1,100position of a value in a range
MAX610largest value
ROUND605rounds to a number of digits
MIN485smallest value
OR480true when any test is true
REPT480repeats text
COUNTIF217counts cells meeting one condition
CHOOSE125picks the nth value from a list
SMALL15nth smallest value

The 12 most used of 14 functions. Counted from the workbook itself. Only functions that Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets and Apple Numbers evaluate the same way are used, so the formulas survive every download format.

How do you use it?

  1. Open the Dashboard for world figures and the lowest-ranked countries, then open a data tab for the full series.
  2. Pick one indicator tab and read across a row for one country's time series, or down a column for one year.
  3. Use the Latest year tab to compare countries on their most recent value; the year column says which year each value is from.
  4. Filter the Region or Income group columns with the header drop-downs to compare groups.
  5. Copy the credit line from the About tab when you publish anything based on the data.

What is it good for?

  • Comparing drinking water and sanitation access across countries
  • Tracking progress toward universal safely managed services over 25 years
  • Building a regional comparison for a water or health report
  • Joining coverage data to other country data on ISO3 codes
  • Ranking countries by the gap to universal access

Questions about this sheet

What does safely managed mean?

Safely managed drinking water comes from an improved source that is on premises, available when needed and free from contamination. Safely managed sanitation means improved facilities not shared with other households, with excreta safely disposed of in place or treated off site.

Why is the basic figure higher than the safely managed figure?

The at-least-basic indicators include everyone counted as safely managed, so the basic share is never lower. The difference is people who use basic services that do not meet every safely managed condition.

Why are some countries blank?

The World Bank publishes no value for them in that year or in any year, so this file does not estimate them. 66 economies have no safely managed drinking water value in any year.

Can I use these figures commercially?

Yes. The World Bank publishes this data under CC BY 4.0, which allows commercial use and adaptation with attribution. The About tab has a credit line you can copy.

Will the numbers match the World Bank website?

They match the API response retrieved on 2026-10-09 (database updated 2026-10-08). The JMP and the World Bank revise past years when new survey data arrive, so later downloads may differ.
