How do you calculate closing stock from inventory movements?
Short answer
Closing stock equals opening stock plus receipts less issues for the same item, location, period, and unit of measure. With 80 opening units, 20 units received, and 65 units issued, the closing balance is 35 units. Convert mixed units before combining them, and keep negative results visible so unposted movements or incorrect inputs can be investigated.
If opening, receipts, and issues are in B11:D11, use =B11+C11-D11. A physical count can then be compared with this book balance.
Can cartons and pieces be added in a stock formula?
Only after conversion to one unit using the appropriate pack factor. Ten cartons plus ten pieces does not mean twenty pieces. Keep the unit and conversion basis with the item record.
