What does this dataset do?

This workbook holds four external-sector indicators from the World Bank's World Development Indicators for 217 countries and territories from 2000 to 2025: total trade in goods and services (% of GDP), exports of goods and services (% of GDP), imports of goods and services (% of GDP), and the current account balance (% of GDP). Each indicator has its own wide tab laid out as one row per country and one column per year.

The Latest year tab retrieves each country's most recent published value for all four series by formula, calculates net exports (exports minus imports when both come from the same year), and draws an in-cell trade-openness bar. The Dashboard compares World Bank regions and income groups and ranks the 15 economies with the highest trade share of GDP.

All values are the World Bank's published figures, unmodified. Where no value is published, the cell remains blank. The About tab documents the indicator codes, definitions and CC BY 4.0 credit line.

What formulas does this dataset use?

This dataset holds 1,757 formulas in 26,588 cells across 8 tabs, so 7% of its cells calculate. They use 12 distinct functions; the longest formula is 117 characters and 1,055 of them read from another tab.

FunctionUsesWhat it does
IF1,681one result when a test is true, another when false
INDEX1,048value at a position in a range
MATCH883position of a value in a range
ISNUMBER699true for a number
MAX244largest value
MIN244smallest value
OR244true when any test is true
REPT244repeats text
ROUND244rounds to a number of digits
AND241true when every test is true
COUNTIF218counts cells meeting one condition
LARGE15nth largest value

Counted from the workbook itself. Only functions that Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets and Apple Numbers evaluate the same way are used, so the formulas survive every download format.

How do you use it?

  1. Open the Dashboard for global KPIs, regional comparisons and the top 15 trade-intensive economies.
  2. Select any indicator tab to read a country's annual series across a row or compare countries down a year column.
  3. Use the Latest year tab to compare exports, imports, net exports and current account balances side by side.
  4. Filter by World Bank region or income group using the header drop-downs.
  5. Copy the citation from the About tab when publishing charts or tables.

What is it good for?

  • Comparing trade openness and export share across countries
  • Screening economies by current account surplus or deficit (% of GDP)

Questions about this sheet

How can trade exceed 100 percent of GDP?

Trade is the sum of gross exports and gross imports, whereas GDP measures domestic value added. Trading hubs that import intermediates and re-export finished goods regularly record gross trade above 100 or 200 percent of GDP.

What is the difference between net exports and the current account balance?

Net exports cover only trade in goods and services (exports minus imports). The current account balance adds net primary income (such as investment income) and net secondary income (such as remittances and transfers).

Why are some country cells blank?

The World Bank publishes no value for that country and year, and this workbook does not interpolate or estimate missing observations.

Can I reuse this dataset commercially?

Yes. The World Bank publishes the World Development Indicators under CC BY 4.0, which permits commercial use and adaptation with attribution.
