What does this dataset do?

This workbook gathers four land-use indicators from the World Bank's World Development Indicators (sourced from the FAO) for 217 countries and territories from 2000 to 2024: forest area as a percentage of land area, total forest area in square kilometers, agricultural land as a percentage of land area, and arable land as a percentage of land area.

The Latest year tab retrieves each country's most recent published value for all four indicators by formula, computes each country's share of total world forest area, and draws an in-cell forest-cover bar. The Dashboard compares World Bank regions and income groups since 2000 and ranks the 15 countries with the largest forest area in square kilometers.

Every figure is the World Bank's published value, unmodified. Blank cells mark years or territories without a published figure. The About tab lists the indicator codes, FAO definitions and CC BY 4.0 credit line.

What formulas does this dataset use?

This dataset holds 1,757 formulas in 29,432 cells across 8 tabs, so 6% of its cells calculate. They use 13 distinct functions; the longest formula is 107 characters and 1,067 of them read from another tab.

FunctionUsesWhat it does
IF1,654one result when a test is true, another when false
INDEX1,033value at a position in a range
MATCH883position of a value in a range
ISNUMBER458true for a number
MAX244largest value
MIN244smallest value
OR244true when any test is true
REPT244repeats text
ROUND244rounds to a number of digits
COUNTIF217counts cells meeting one condition
SUM217adds numbers

The 12 most used of 13 functions. Counted from the workbook itself. Only functions that Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets and Apple Numbers evaluate the same way are used, so the formulas survive every download format.

How do you use it?

  1. Open the Dashboard for global forest and agricultural shares, regional trends since 2000 and the 15 largest forest holders.
  2. Open any indicator tab to trace one country's land-use series across a row or compare countries down a year column.
  3. Use the Latest year tab to compare forest share, total forest area, agricultural share and arable share side by side.
  4. Filter by World Bank region or income group using the header drop-downs.
  5. Copy the credit line from the About tab when publishing maps, charts or tables.

What is it good for?

  • Comparing forest cover and deforestation trends since 2000 across countries
  • Ranking countries by total forest area in square kilometers or share of world forests
  • Comparing agricultural land and arable cropland shares across regions
  • Joining land-use indicators to country area, population and water withdrawal datasets on ISO3 codes
  • Building land-cover reference tables for environmental and geography courses

Questions about this sheet

What is the difference between agricultural land and arable land?

Agricultural land includes arable land (temporary crops, meadows and market gardens), land under permanent crops (such as orchards, cocoa and coffee), and permanent pastures. Arable land is only the temporary-crop and temporary-fallow component.

Can forest share plus agricultural land exceed 100 percent?

Occasionally in national reporting where agroforestry or wooded grazing land is counted in both categories, though in most countries the remaining share of land area consists of built-up land, barren land, glaciers and shrubland.

Why are some cells blank?

The World Bank publishes no value for that economy and year, and this workbook does not interpolate or estimate missing values.

Can I use this dataset commercially?

Yes. The World Bank publishes these WDI series under CC BY 4.0, allowing commercial reuse and adaptation with credit.
