| 1. On the Rooms tab, enter each room's number, name, level and department. |
| 2. Enter the length and width in metres. For an irregular room, type the area in the override column and leave the length and width as a note. |

About this template
This schedule lists the rooms of a two-level building with their level, department, length, width, clear height and finishes. Area is length times width, or a typed-in value for an irregular room. The sheet also gives each area in square feet and each volume in cubic metres, so one schedule serves both metric and imperial briefs.
The Summary tab totals rooms, area and volume by level, by department and by floor finish, using SUMIF and COUNTIF on the Rooms tab. Shares of the total area show how the building divides up. Three check cells confirm that each breakdown adds back to the room list, so a mistyped level or department shows up at once.
The example is a fictional community learning centre of about 1,200 square metres over two levels, with 27 rooms. Replace the rooms with your own from the drawings. The sheet uses the room areas as drawn; it does not add walls or shared areas, which the space program template handles separately.
What’s inside
- Area = length × width, or a typed-in area for irregular rooms (override column G)
- Square feet from one conversion factor on the Summary tab (10.7639 ft² per m²)
- Volume = area × clear height, totalled by level and department
- SUMIF and COUNTIF summaries by level, department and floor finish
- Check cells confirm each summary adds back to the room list
Tabs
| Tab | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Rooms | One row per room with level, department, dimensions or area override, clear height, area, volume and finishes. |
| Summary | Conversion factor, totals by level, department and floor finish, shares of area, and the check cells. |
| Notes | What the workbook does, how to use it, the formulas, the assumptions and the professional-verification note. |
How to use it
- On the Rooms tab, enter each room's number, name, level and department.
- Enter the length and width in metres, or type the area for an irregular room in the override column.
- Enter the clear height and choose the floor, wall and ceiling finishes from the lists.
- Read the totals and shares by level, department and floor finish on the Summary tab.
- Confirm the check cells say OK after each change.
Good for
- Building a room list for a brief or programme check
- Preparing area and volume figures for a finishes or cleaning schedule
- Checking that departmental areas match the planning target
- Comparing floor areas by level before design development
Questions about this sheet
Can I use it for rooms that are not rectangular?
Yes. Type the room's area from the plan into the override column. The length and width then serve as a note.
Does the area include walls?
No. The sheet uses the room areas as you enter them. Gross and net definitions depend on your jurisdiction and brief; the space program template handles grossing.
How do I add rooms?
Insert rows inside the Rooms table and copy the formulas down. The summaries read the whole table, so new rows are counted.
Why do the check cells matter?
They compare each summary with the room list. A level, department or finish spelled differently from the list is not counted, and the check says so.
